Measuring plant health with a refractometer. 🌿 We use it to read brix—the sugar content in a plant. I take a leaf, press the midrib (that’s where most moisture and sugars are), and check the reading in sunlight. A 10–12 brix level in the leaf means stronger resistance to insects and fungi. During grain fill, you’ll see even higher readings since sugars move to the ear. Lots of lovely people seem to be asking about testing hay using the refractometer method. I had a few people ask for a step by step reel which I posted on instagram. Thought I’d share here in case it helps someone. We’ve been testing every single bale using this method for over two years. My understanding is UK stays fairly low in regards to starch content.
