The Spurling test is used to assess cervical radiculopathy by detecting nerve root compression in the cervical spine. Patient Position • Patient is seated comfortably. Procedure 1. Ask the patient to extend the neck. 2. Then rotate the head toward the symptomatic side. 3. Add lateral flexion to the same side. 4. Apply gentle downward axial compression on the head. Positive Test • Reproduction of the patient’s radicular arm pain, tingling, numbness, or paresthesia on the same side. Negative Test
